The rich layers of time are deeply connected to design and creativity. Here’s how we see it

In this issue of the Holistic Design Journal, we explore the relationship between time and design. It’s time for Principle No.6 “Relate to Time”.

Here in the Holistic Design Journal, you can also find all the previous issues, where I share thoughts, knowledge and ideas in the framework of our guiding 10 Principles of Holistic Design.

The end of an old and the beginning of a new year marks a time to reflect for most of us. Strategic overviews of a year that’s passed, and visions for the next. But also simply some time off, leaving room for more spontaneous thoughts emerging. So it’s suitable that the principle we look at in this issue revolves around the concept of time, and how being mindful of it will unlock layers of conscious creation, quality, collaboration, beauty and joy!

Notes from the making of LES OBJETS Artisan Collection:

For me, it’s essential to be present, dedicated and caring when making objects.

We work a lot with linseed paint, a paint taking its time to dry, which guides the design process, while gaining aesthetic qualities, and also time for reflection and overview.

I’m certain it will translate into the piece, and determines both it’s appearance and built in story and value.

And I strongly believe it will translates to how you enjoy it, connect to it and care for it when owning it.

Design and creativity is deeply linked to the concept of time.
Let’s look at 8 ways how:

  1. DESIGN IS A PROCESS (not just the result)
Design is a process where we ask questions, experiment, learn, propose, listen, iterate…ultimately taking part in forming the way we live.

  2. DESIGNING EXPERIENCES (not static functions)
We strive to always go beyond the necessary functions and design fuller situations, moments with meaning, and a progress in time and space. From interiors and objects to exhibition design and multisensory experiences like our fragrance.

  3. QUALITY GUIDES TIME

How can we regain some of knowledge, skills, and qualities that was lost constantly pushing to speed things up, not to mention the negative impact on the planet?

  4. A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS
All we really have is our time, and we should spend it wisely, collaborate well to make conscious choices and build value through shared knowledge. Let’s inspire and evolve together!

  5. LAYERS OF TIME & SPACE
While presence and focus is essential in creativity and life, humans have the ability to gather the layers of time for inspiration, learnings and reflections. It inspires me to see connections, synergies, or completely crosss combine ideas….

  6. TIME IS CYCLICAL
Time is more cyclical than a straight “timeline”. A continuing interchange between day and night, of seasons. Humans used to follow these naturally, but we almost designed away this rewarding relationship. It’s fulfilling to again explore how to work with it and be rewarded with the sense of natural direction it entails.

  7. SET UP FOR FLOW
Time moves slow and fast, it seems to stretch. Clock time only captures some of it. Flow is a desired state fully immersed in the creative work. But you cannot simply wait for flow. You set yourself up and work to enter it, designing and engaging in your path of the creative process.

  8. EVOLVING & GROWING
Everything in nature moves, evolves, grow, create. It is a natural state. Everything else but us, creates in a sustainable way. In highly intelligent symbioses that we’re just starting to understand. Exciting time’s ahead!

‘Tain’t what you do,
it’s the way that you do it!

A wishlist for successful collaboration with clients and collaborators

We strive for a design process that:

  • Dares to dive deep into the real problems, needs and opportunities.

  • Opens up for us to make environmental, economical and social sustainability choices

  • Curiously finds the right questions to answer (a well made result from asking the wrong or very shallow questions seldom leads you very far).

  • Explores and learns along the way, and open-mindedly adapts to fit those new learnings.

  • Invites us into and makes collaboration easier (and I promise: much more fun!). As a designer, there’s a limit to what I can create for you. But with you…now we’re talking!

Devote yourself to care routines for interiors and objects you love!

What better way to spend some time off at the beginning of a new year, than taking care of your furniture and loved objects. It’s essential for a long product lifespan. And builds an appreciation for what we’ve already got.

These Care Routine Kits by our client Act of Caring includes everything you need to care for Wood, Leather, Marble or Tech surfaces and objects.

Come by our studio, we have a few kits, or DM to order!

The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable

Embrace the process.

A mood board, and a material board in particular, is a platform for further inquieries, add-ons, reflections, sharing.

It’s a great way to invite clients, collaborators and students into the process, to take part, understand and elevate the projects.

Don’t get stuck by the screen, hone your skills and presence equally in the real world!

A scentscape unfolds layers in time and space

What absolutely intrigues me about olfactory experiences and scent creation. A fragrance changes from the moment you apply it, unfolding layers of the story. For the Love of Pine starts at the moment when you enter the spacious Pine forest and experience a woody, fresh, herbascious, layered scentscape deepening into more mature and balsamic pine wood notes. What an intriguing creation to engage in and I hope you will enjoy the experience.

Top: Bergamotte, Thyme, Cumin.
Heart: Pinus Sylvestris.
Base: Vetiver, Frankincense, Copaiba.

1x 100% essential oil aroma oil for diffusers
1x perfume-oil roller (20%) for pulse points
1x hand made diffuser stone

I wish this newsletter could carry the scent to you, but the most sensual way to experience it is still of course to come by our studio/showroom and try it for yourself. Or ask for a sample.

You can also order the handmade box here.

Look forward to continuing and new collaborations this year!
With Love

Principle No.7 – Re-connect to the Earth

For the next issue, it’s time to explore how we can regain our relationship with and re-connect to the Earth. Key, it’s all about learning from those who never really lost the connection. I feel such gratefulness to that and to be able to discover layers and layers of understandings, insights, methods and skills.
